On Growth and Form

performances

On Growth and Form is a tribute in several parts to the mathematical biologist D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson and his major work of the same title, publicated in 1917. All four parts are "living pictures" referring to some chapters of this book. Fundamental ideas from there were taken and interpreted freely through sound, music, scene, interaction and video:

I. The Equiangular Spiral
II. The Shape of Horns. With a Note on Torsion
III. The Forms of Cells and Cell-Aggregates
IV. On the Theory of Transformations

On Growth and Form was commissioned by the festival pyramidale #16 on the topic "Kultivieren & Verwildern" (cultivating and overgrowing) and premiered in September 2017 at the gallery center Pyramide in Berlin-Hellersdorf.

program notes
